About Spike

--as told by Spike
I am a Wire Haired Fox Terrier and my name is Spike E. Boy. I was born in November or December of 2000. I don't know what my mother or my father's names are. I don't really have a pedigree. I was probably born in Minnesota. I came home to live with my new family on August 3, 2001.

My brother, Oz, and I used to live with a family who left us tied outside and didn't have any time to play with us. One day they took us to a place called a "shelter". On August 1st, my future aunt, Cyndi, was in St. Cloud, Minnesota, with her young sons - who would be my cousins before long! The boys like to stop at the Tri-County Humane Society and see the dogs, and that's where Oz and I were. The next day, Aunt Cyndi sent an e-mail to my mom telling her about us.

My mom said she thought about me and Oz all day, and when she got home from work, she e-mailed the Terrier List and the Foxy-K9 lists telling them about me and Oz. Pam Bishop from Fox Terrier Rescue e-mailed our mom back right away. To make a long story short, on Friday August 3, I came to my new home with my brother Oz!! We were 8 months old at the time. The family we lived with before didn't have time for us. We were left outside during the day and crated at night. We were very dirty and quite matted and had poor muscle tone, but otherwise we were very healthy.

We both got groomed that weekend - although the clipper was a little scary for us! We got two new sisters coming here - Tara and Hayley . Hayley is like us, Tara is a white dog with a much shorter nose! Our sisters liked us but they would beat us up when we got too playful. But they're older and wiser, so we listen to them.

A couple of weeks after we came to live here, my mom started acting really sad. Then they got our cages in the truck and we went on a long car ride to a place called Wisconsin. There we met a nice lady named Pam who had a white dog that was about Tara's size, but they called it a Bull Terrier. He was pretty funny! He liked to play. My new parents seemed pretty sad. Then they got things gathered up and I heard my mom say "We're going to take Spike back with us." So I got back in my cage in the truck and rode back here to my home where I've been ever since. Oz got to stay with Pam and her dog for a week and then he went to a place called Michigan to stay with another lady named Penny. After about a week, Oz got to go meet his new family. They live in Chicago and there is a mom, a dad, and two kids for Oz to play with! We hear from Oz and his family and he's very happy and his new family love him a lot! Oz's girl-kid plays the violin and he likes to sing with her! I'm happy that Oz and I both have homes where we are loved. I don't miss him much because he and I weren't getting along very well - we were fighting with each other a lot. My mom said that we would have just fought more and more, so it's better that we both found different homes.

One of the first really exciting things I got to do was go on a thing called "vacation". I'd never heard of a thing like that before, but I sure had fun! We went to a place called "Gull Lake Resort" where we did a thing called "fishing" and we got to eat lots of neat food, and me and Tara and Hayley hunted squirrels and chipmunks! I had so much fun! It is great living with my new family!!

When we got home, I started going to Obedience School. I liked my teacher, Tom, and I liked all the girl dogs in my class! I flirted with them all the time. I passed my class and got a yellow ribbon for 3rd place in my whole class! I was pretty happy and so was my mom. My mom said she wants to keep taking me to obedience classes, and that would make me really happy.

If I had one wish, it would be that all fox terriers that are abandoned or surrendered to rescue would find great homes like Oz and I did. I am so happy and will try not to get in trouble - but sometimes I can't help it. I guess it's part of being a fox terrier....!
