When my people picked me up to take me home, it was dark. They put me in the car with them and I decided I was afraid, even though my new Mom held me and talked to me. So I cried as loud as I could all the way to my new home. And I had to cry for a long time, because it was an hour from my home in Castle Rock to my home in Colorado Springs! I guess I cried really loud and got on my new parent's nerves since I've been told that they were tempted to leave me on the side of the road by the time they were halfway home! I was just testing them to see if they really loved me. I guess they do, because I'm still here.
When we got to my new home, I was happy to find out that I had an older sister waiting there for me! Chelsea was my Mom's baby until I came along. I don't know why, but Chelsea had the strangest look on her face when I came in the door - she kind of looked like she wanted to throw up, or maybe pack my bags and send me back. But I didn't care! I knew I could make her love me, too! I always made sure I was right there by her, playing with her even when she didn't want to play. She would growl at me, but I just knew if I kept trying, she would come around! After all, I was awfully cute!
As a puppy, I went to Obedience School and passed my classes. I was usually pretty obedient, except when I didn't feel like it. Sometimes there were more important things to do, like sniffing things and playing with other dogs. It's funny how red my Mom's face would get when I was busy with other things.
We moved out of our apartment and into a house that had a really big back yard. My Uncle Brian came to our house and cut a hole in the wall for us and we could go outside through a flap any time we wanted! Chelsea and I loved that. I would play a lot in that yard and help my Dad plant trees and flowers. Sometimes I wouldn't like where the flowers were and I'd dig them up, but Dad didn't seem to agree with my opinion on that. It was funny how red my Dad's face would get when I'd dig up his flowers.
When I turned two years old, I got a great present - Mom brought home another sister for me! Hayley came to live with us right before Christmas in 1994. I was so happy! Once again, Chelsea had the strangest look on her face when Hayley came in the door - she kind of looked like she wanted to throw up, or maybe pack Hayley's bags and send her back. But we didn't care! We knew we could make her love us!
Late in 1995, our Dad went away for a month and our Mom packed a bunch of stuff in boxes. We didn't eat very well that month since our Dad knows how to cook but our Mom doesn't like to. Hot-dogs and cereal... it was really sad. One day some men in a big truck came and took all of our stuff. We were very confused. Then our Dad came back and the next day they put us in cages in the back of our Mom's car and we drove a really long time overnight and ended up in Minnesota. We lived in an apartment for 5 months and we hated it. Then our people bought us a house, cut another hole in the wall for us and fenced in the yard. We like our house and our yard.
In 1996, my sister Chelsea got pretty sick. We could tell she wasn't feeling very well. Then one day she left us. Hayley and I were pretty sad about it. We divided Chelsea's duties between us and kept the home safe and sound like she would have wanted. We also made sure our parents weren't too sad. But it was a very hard time for everyone.
In August of 2001, we had a surprise. Our parents brought home two little boy dogs that were like Hayley. Mom called them "rescue dogs" and said we were their "foster home". One of them went to live in a place called Chicago. But the other one, Spike, stayed here with us. I think my mom and dad really decided they liked him too much to give him up. I guess he's o.k. He used to be a big baby about everything and was afraid of everything, but he's a lot braver now. Me and Hayley taught him how to bark at the neighbor dogs and how to chase birds and hunt for mice. I play with him sometimes, but Hayley plays with him the most. They're both nuts, so I just make sure things don't get too wild around here. Chelsea would have wanted me to do that - it's what she used to do when me and Hayley got too wild.
